Different generations of German jazz are represented – by elder statesman Emil Mangelsdorff, by visionary avant-garde pianist Joachim Kühn as well as his highly acclaimed young collegue, shooting star Pablo Held or by Peter Bolte. And a long concert night is dedicated to the present and future of the local jazz scene with the Jazz-Institute Berlin. Collected and grouped together in a couple of bands of different talent/teacher shapes and sizes it promises to be a most thrilling and lively event.
From the European heartland of Austria we welcome Jazz Bigband Graz, trumpeter Lorenz Raab’s trio Bleu and Viennese trombonist Daniel Riegler with his ensemble Studio Dan. Besides improvisators such as Denis Colin and and rising talent Céline Bonacina on the baritone saxophone, France sends its Orchestre National de Jazz with an homage to Billie Holiday. In London Nils has spotted the Partisans and Led Bib while the city’s expatriate Django Bates introduces his recent Danish trio with a Charlie Parker homage. The amazing Kočani Orkestar from Macedonia teams up with the south Italian ‘banda’ Municipale Balcanica. Coming in from the north, we have Finnish pianist and harpist Iro Haarla, from Sweden vocalist Sofia Jernberg with pianist Cecilia Persson (Paavo) and saxophonist Magnus Lindgren. And Dutch alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade will actually display his talent with two outfits in one Quasimodo-concert. JazzFest Berlin 2010‘s programme boasts of more singing than ever before: US-vocal quartet Moss with Theo Bleckmann, the eccentric Danish-German duo Little Red Suitcase or singer Christine Tobin from Ireland, to name but a few.
As in previous years, all concerts will be recorded and/or simulcast by ARD, German public radio. Moreover, the festival has developed three joint projects with the ARD network: Kinsmen featuring alto saxophonists Rudresh Mahanthappa and Kadri Gopalnath, zeitkratzer‘s commissioned project with Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal and Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, as well as the hr-Bigband‘s concert with German avant-piano legend Joachim Kühn.
Besides Haus der Berliner Festspiele, clubs A-Trane and Quasimodo, Hotel Savoy Berlin and Jazz-Institute Berlin’s Georg-Neumann-Saal at Einsteinufer will be the venues for JazzFest Berlin 2010.
